Explore the finest wines available in the Cayman Islands with a wine tasting in the sumptuous surroundings of our dedicated wine room
If you love wine and everything about it, there is one venue for wine tasting in the Cayman Islands that stands head and shoulders above the crowd – the glorious Wine Room at Grand Old House, where regular private tastings offer wine lovers a chance to enjoy some of the best and rarest wines from around the world.
Whether you’re a connoisseur or are still finding your way in the world of wine, a tasting at Grand Old House is a great way to learn about wines and vintners, as well as discover new wines that you may not find in Cayman wine shops, or maybe have never heard of before. Grand Old House has a reputation for offering fine wines at tasting sessions, with more than 800 selections in 15,000 bottles from around the world.
Since opening in 1969, Grand Old House has gained a reputation amongst connoisseurs as the best place in Grand Cayman to go for rare wines, expert advice, and exceptional choice. Catering to growing demand, the Wine Club was established in 2013 for wine enthusiasts to develop their knowledge further. It’s no surprise, therefore, that Grand Old House is a consistent winner of Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence, two glass rating.
A wine tasting at Grand Old House is usually classified by region. Recent tastings hosted by one of the restaurant’s highly trained sommeliers featured wines from Spain and Tuscany and were very popular with local wine lovers and visitors to the Cayman Islands.
Spanish wines featured in our tastings included 2005 Bodegas Numanthia Termes, 2007 Bodegas El Nido Clio and 1995 Bodegas Fernandez Gran Reserva Tinto Pesquera. The 1997 Tuscan wines included Caparzo Brunello Riserva, Fattoria Le Pupille, Saffredi, and Castello Dei Rampolla Sammarco.
While many restaurants in Grand Cayman source their wines exclusively through local distributors, Grand Old House prides itself on its hard-to-find wines and vintages often sourced directly from wineries or from trusted wine auction houses across the world. Grand Old House has a large selection of vintages from France, Italy, and California, the oldest dating back to 1927.
The Wine Room offers the ideal location for sampling and appraising both popular and hard-to-find wines. Guests get to enjoy a selection of fine wines in a magnificent setting with expertly paired canapés prepared by the restaurant’s team of award-winning chefs, renowned for producing some of the best food in the Cayman Islands.
These events are open to our wine club members and non-members alike, but there is limited seating for these events, so an early reservation is highly recommended – as is a wrap or jacket if you find the Wine Room’s climate-controlled temperature somewhat chilly at 20°C (68°F).
Of course, the Wine Room is not the only reason to visit Grand Old House. With a prime position on the waterfront, Grand Old House not only has an exceptional wine collection but also offers a first-class menu and – for spirit lovers – one of the best collections of Armagnacs and rare bourbons in the Caribbean.
