Honoring Excellence in Wine-making - World's Best Wine List Awards 2019
04 Dec 2019

London dominates the global scene in The World of Fine Wine 2019 World’s Best Wine Lists Awards in association with Gaggenau

Establishments awarded globally total: 514 three-star wine lists; 407 two-star wine lists; and 106 one-star wine lists

London sweeps a total of 67 three-star awards in the 2019 World’s Best Wine Lists Awards –– 23 more than in 2018 – with establishments including: HIDE, Sager + Wilde Hackney Road, Level 9 Restaurant at Tate Modern and Hakkasan Hanway Place the honors in addition to having already been awarded, respectively: Best Spirits List in the World, Best Medium-Size Wine List in the World, Best Designed Wine List in Europe and Best Sake List in Europe during the ceremony which took place at Merchant Taylors’ Hall on September 10th 2019. Other London-based three-star winners included: 67 Pall Mall, Bubbledogs and Sketch; and first-time entrants 34 Mayfair, Bar Douro and Clipstone.

New York is second, picking up a total of 48 three-star awards for establishments including: Blue Hill (also winner of Best Short Wine List in the World 2019), Eleven Madison Park (also winner of Champions’ League Best Wine List 2019) and Terroir (also winner of Most Original Wine List in the World 2019). Other three-star honors recipients included: Casa Mono & Bar Jamón, The Lambs Club, The Modern, Temple Court, The Polo Bar and The Nomad Restaurant & Hotel, which added to its place as Runner-up – Best Spirits List in the World.

Sydney held its own with 24, half as many three-star establishments as New York. The Rockpool group’s Rockpool Bar & Grill dominated, also taking Best Long Wine List in Australasia 2019 and Best Spirits List in Australasia 2019 as well as being named Runner-up – Best Long Wine List in the World. Other prominent three-star winners from the New South Wales city include Aria Restaurant, Bennelong, Jonah’s Restaurant Rosetta and The Cut Bar & Grill.

Newly (since 2017) opened restaurants around the globe made their mark on the three-star list, with Wine Bar George (Florida, US) and Momofuku Las Vegas (Nevada, US) adding to their wins of Best Micro Wine List in the World 2019 and a Jury Prize, respectively. Other new restaurants recognized as having three-star wine lists include: Nautika Restaurant (Dubrovnik, Croatia), Fare (London, UK), Chun (Macau), RitzCoffier at Bürgenstock Hotels & Resort Lake Lucerne (Obbürgen, Switzerland) and Time to Wine (Tallinn, Estonia).

Numerous restaurants around the globe received jury prize recognitions in addition to their three stars, including: 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana (Macau), Acanto (Illinois, US), Cyann at Constance Ephelia (Mahé, Seychelles), June’s All Day (Texas, US), Lazy Bear (California, US), Le Clarence (Paris, France), Leib Restoran (Tallinn, Estonia), Momofuku Seiobo (Sydney, Australia), Restaurant Tantris (Munich, Germany) and The Vineyard (Newbury, UK).

Now in its sixth year, the World’s Best Wine Lists Awards’ prestigious judging panel – chaired by Neil Beckett, Editor of The World of Fine Wine magazine – featured: award-winning wine writer, Andrew Jefford; award-winning sommelier, Andreas Larsson; wine writers Ch’ng Poh Tiong, Elin McCoy, Francis Percival and Alder Yarrow; sommelier, Luciana Girotto; and wine writer and lecturer Anne Krebiehl MW. They assessed over 1,000 of the world’s best wine lists to determine the shortlists and winners.

All of those awarded must reach certain standards in relation to a range of criteria, among which the most important are: the breadth, depth, interest, quality, and value of the wine selection (relative to the nature and size of the list and any specialism).

A three-star award recognizes a great wine list and takes into consideration a very high proportion of leading producers, established and emerging; a very good mix of vintages in terms of age, maturity, quality, and style; an extensive by-the-glass and half-bottle program; and clear evidence of originality, personality, and vision.

Since their inception in 2014, the awards have gone from strength to strength, and are “rapidly becoming as coveted as Michelin Stars,” according to former World Sommelier Champion Gerard Basset MS MW OBE. On the awards, The World of Fine Wine’s Editor, Neil Beckett, commented that “the geographical spread of our top winners speaks volumes for the global spread of fine wine and also for the global scope of these awards”.
