Why Nino's is the Best Wine Bar in the Cayman Islands

Why Nino's is the Best Wine Bar in the Cayman Islands

At Nino’s you get to learn about different wines, sample them, then decide which to take home with you – all from Grand Old House’s award-winning and extensive wine cellar.

Since opening in 1969, Grand Old House has gained a reputation amongst connoisseurs as the best place in Grand Cayman to go for rare wines, expert advice, and exceptional choice. Now, connoisseurs and neophytes alike have a place to indulge their love of wine as well as learn about them from the experts in a dedicated space.

Named after Grand Old House’s sommelier, Nino’s Wine Bar and Retail Shop is where you go to discover new wines, learn about them, indulge in some deliberative sampling, either by the glass or the bottle, then choose which you’d like to take home with you.

Open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 3 pm onwards, Nino’s Wine Bar is the ideal location for sampling and appraising both popular and hard-to-find wines. Guests get to enjoy a selection of fine wines in a magnificent setting with expertly paired canapés prepared by Grand Old House’s team of award-winning chefs, renowned for producing the dishes that make Grand Old House the finest waterfront restaurant in Grand Cayman.

Nino’s extensive retail list runs to 500 wines over 20 pages, offering a comprehensive overview of some of the best wines produced in Italy, France, and the USA, as well as a ‘rest of the world’ sampling of around 50 carefully selected wines from Chile, Argentine, Australia, South Africa, Austria, New Zealand, Greece, and Germany.

Each Wednesday there’s a winetasting session where Nino himself and/or fellow sommelier Luciano either conduct a blind tasting or talk guests through four or five wines from a particular region, offering insights, recommendations, and an informative explanation of the selected wines.

Every Thursday it’s the ‘Battle of the Wines’, where two opposite or diverse wines are served side by side for comparison. For example, how do a Californian and a French Syrah compare? Or, what are the merits of a French Sancerre versus a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc?  Find out, during an entertaining and informative session of wine, tapas, and stimulating conversation about opposites that are so different, yet share similarities. There is no Cayman wine tasting event quite like it.

On Fridays, along with the tapas and the conversation, it’s time for organic wines to show their worth. This weekly feature is where guests get to discover and sample the art of organic, natural, and no-intervention wines. Organic wines are made from grapes grown in accordance with the principles of organic farming, which typically excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides. There are many options, and Nino’s introduces something new every Friday.

Saturdays at Nino’s are unapologetically indulgent. From 3:30 pm it’s sushi, oysters, and Champagne that accompany the tapas and conversation. The sushi is handcrafted by expert sushi chef Thushara and a variety of Champagnes are available by the glass or the bottle.

All these events are open to Grand Old House’s Wine Club members and non-members alike, but there is limited seating, so an early reservation is highly recommended. Call us at +1 345 949 9333 to make your reservation today, or email us at info@grandoldhouse.com
