Grand Old House: A Legend of the Islands

Grand Old House: A Legend of the Islands
23 Feb 2021

For more than half a century, Grand Cayman’s most famous restaurant has delighted diners as a spectacular venue with excellent food and friendly staff.  Today, the legendary beachside eatery is also a safe haven from pandemic woes.

If you love food, and you love the Cayman Islands, there’s one place that you are sure to know about – the venerable Grand Old House, the grande dame of Cayman Islands dining.

Since the 1960s, the Grand Old House, a former colonial-era planter’s mansion built in 1908, has set the standard for gourmet restaurants in the Cayman Islands. A policy of using the freshest local ingredients from farm and sea, combined with innovative preparation, has cemented its world-class reputation for creating a unique gourmet experience that fuses international cuisine with the ingredients, styles, and cultures that make up the Caribbean foodie landscape.

While the spectacular menu curated by Sri Lankan chef Thushara continues to delight diners, a year of coping with a global pandemic has necessitated changes to the restaurant’s operations and even more emphasis on best-practice, hygiene, and sanitation to protect staff and patrons.

Strict hygiene in food preparation and staff-to-guest interaction go hand-in-hand with a thorough cleaning and sanitation regime designed to minimize the risk of anyone being exposed to potential infection. In tandem, venues are tailored to still have the wow factor under changed conditions.

In the dining areas, the restaurant’s 5,000-square-foot panoramic waterfront seaside terrace and colonial-style indoor private dining rooms are reconfigured as necessary to allow ample space for diners to continue to enjoy everything Grand Old House has to offer while still maintaining safe social distance and without negating effect on the intimacy of the experience or the ambiance.

Masks, social distancing, restrictions on gatherings, constant hand-washing… it’s a new normal, for now. But Grand Old House goes one step beyond to keep the magic alive, and the staff, despite the difficulties, are determined to maintain the friendly, ‘service with a smile’ philosophy that Grand Old House is renowned for.

With more than 50 years of experience creating the best local and international flavors, a truly impressive and award-winning wine list, and a lively calendar of live music, Grand Old House manages to go from strength to strength, even in the current difficult circumstances.

Whether you’re a regular guest, an occasional visitor, or experiencing the Cayman Islands and  Grand Old House for the first time, you cannot fail to be impressed. The glorious setting, the ambiance, the quality of the food and service, the friendly staff, and the current all-too-necessary attention to hygiene and safety – these are the things that make Grand Old House a legend.
