Sampling the Wine Scene in the Cayman Islands

Sampling the Wine Scene in the Cayman Islands
June 30, 2016

The Cayman Islands are renowned as a high-end and luxury holiday destination in the Western Caribbean. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that this premiere vacation and tourist destination has carved a reputation for its fondness and selection of wines from all over the world. Cayman invites you to sample its fine cuisine and dining with an unparalleled exposure to some of the best wines in the world.

Cayman Wine Scene

In Cayman, you can expect the best when it comes to wine and spirits. Unlike a few years ago, when only a handful of wine labels were sold, the scene is quite different today when you can buy some of the best and most expensive wine here.  Only in Cayman can you sample extensive offerings from Bordeaux and California as well as selections from Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, as well as the Rhone Valley. Wine connoisseurs of varied palates and diverse drinking expectations obtain a fabulous wine experience here. Expect wines from Tuscany and Piedmont, including vineyards such as Lisini, Venica, Giacosa and Biondi Santi as well! Indeed, Cayman wine has a reputation that is hard to beat!

Liquor Stores in Cayman

There are many liquor stores in Cayman, which sell wine, but the best wine is found in the most exquisite of places. Many Cayman wine shops are located in various locations around the islands and are open until 10 pm for convenience. Many of these wine stores also have scheduled wine tasting events, where you can sample the wine they offer. Some of these are free, while others are paid. Many liquor stores here have installed the Napa Technology wine tasting which makes it possible for these stores to offer complimentary samples every day. Many wine stores here even offer free deliveries so you can order your wine from the comfort of your home.

Although you can order the best of wine, most wine stores are also able to provide recommendations so that you can buy whatever label suits your tastes the best.  Many stores can even deliver to your residence anywhere in Grand Cayman. Some stores even handpick from vineyards worldwide and sell them by the case. They also have their own climate-controlled cellars.

Wine Scene in Cayman Restaurants

Many restaurants in Cayman also offer diverse and extensive wine lists and often compete for the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Today, a typical upscale restaurant in Cayman has the capability to offer hundreds of meticulously assembled wine collections consisting of different labels along with consistent and excellent service.  You can expect signature collections, wine lockers, and exclusive wine rooms as well. Cayman is also known for its wine programmes and wine-tasting events famed all around the world.

Armagnac Wine

Armagnac wine in Cayman is especially popular, and some restaurants pride in serving vintage Armagnac wine apart from their regular menu.  The difference is that while cognac is mass-produced, Armagnac wine is handcrafted by small-scale producers. The production method also differs as Cognac is aged in oak casks mainly from Tronçais or Limousin, Armagnac is aged in 400 to 430 litre oak casks, which are made using oaks from local forests in Bas Armagnac.

Conclusion

In Cayman, liquor carries a very heavy duty. This is reflected in the liquor store prices and the costs you pay at bars and restaurants. For example, duty on wine is CI$3.60 per litre. You can use your duty allowance of one bottle when you fly back into Cayman. Cayman supermarkets are not licensed to sell wines or spirits while liquor stores usually remain open Monday-Saturday, 10am-7pm. So, while in cayman, sample and enjoy the wine scene here!
